Time Anxiety

Shifting Focus from Outcomes to Outputs and the Myth of the Perfect Time
Have you ever felt that you didn’t have enough time? Or you started too late? That you were behind? This is the Tyranny of Time Anxiety.
The Tyranny of Time Anxiety
Time anxiety is the persistent worry that we are running out of time or not using it wisely and it can be a heavy burden. It often manifests as an internal clock ticking louder with every passing day, reminding us of all the things we should be doing. The fear of making the wrong choice, of failing, or of starting something at the “wrong” time keeps us stuck in a cycle of inaction.
This anxiety stems from a focus on outcomes—the fixation on achieving the perfect result. When we see success as a single, monumental destination rather than a series of smaller steps, we become paralysed by the pressure of getting everything just right. This mindset leads to overthinking, procrastination, and, ironically, wasted time.
Shift Focus From Outcomes to Outputs
Reframing Success: From Outcomes to Outputs
A powerful antidote to time anxiety is shifting focus from outcomes to outputs. Rather than being consumed by the idea of a perfectly executed project, we can instead focus on showing up and taking action consistently. An output-driven mindset emphasises process over perfection—allowing progress to happen in real time, rather than being delayed by analysis paralysis.
Show Up Consistently
For example, instead of waiting for the perfect business plan before launching a venture, you could start by offering a simple service and refining it as you go. Be comfortable with getting it wrong. Instead of waiting for complete confidence before sharing your knowledge, you could begin writing and learning along the way. Small, intentional actions compound over time, leading to meaningful progress that would never have happened had you waited for the ideal conditions.
The Illusion of the “Right” Time
One of the greatest lies we tell ourselves is that there will be a perfect time to begin something. We convince ourselves that once we have more knowledge, more resources, or more confidence, we will finally be ready. The truth? There is never a perfect time. Life will always present challenges, distractions, and reasons to wait.
The people who achieve their goals are not necessarily those with the best circumstances; they are simply the ones who start despite uncertainty. They embrace imperfect beginnings and trust that clarity and momentum will come from action, not before it.
Why Not Start Now?
If you are waiting for certainty, you could wait forever. Instead, take a leap. Start small. Accept that your first attempt will be messy but necessary. Each step forward teaches you something, sharpens your skills, and builds resilience. The sooner you begin, the sooner you’ll realise that action is the true catalyst for growth.
Time will not stop moving. The clock is ticking next to me as I write this. So, why not start now?
