IKIGAI Model

The Neuroscience of Ikigai: A Brain-Based Approach to Purpose

The Ikigai model provides a structured way to explore purpose, aligning passion, mission, profession, and vocation. From a neuroscience perspective, this process engages key brain networks and neurochemicals that influence motivation, well-being, and decision-making.

Brain Regions & Neurochemicals Activated by the Ikigai Model

  1. Prefrontal Cortex (PFC) – Clarity & Decision-Making
    • When reflecting on what you love, what you’re good at, and what the world needs, the PFC is activated, facilitating higher-order thinking, goal-setting, and future planning.
  2. Dopamine System – Motivation & Reward
    • Identifying and pursuing activities that align with your passion and strengths triggers the release of dopamine, reinforcing motivation and perseverance.
  3. Anterior Cingulate Cortex (ACC) – Emotional Regulation & Meaning
    • The ACC helps in integrating emotional and logical insights, ensuring that purpose-driven goals resonate deeply.
  4. Default Mode Network (DMN) – Self-Reflection & Identity Formation
    • Engaging in self-inquiry activates the DMN, which is involved in constructing personal narratives and aligning values with actions.
  5. Amygdala & Stress Regulation – Overcoming Fear & Doubt
    • Addressing fears related to career change or purpose activates the amygdala. Mindfulness and intentional planning help regulate stress responses.
  6. Oxytocin Release – Social Connection & Impact
    • Aligning with a mission that benefits others stimulates oxytocin, reinforcing social bonds and fulfillment.
